Session Two of First Responder Career Exploration Camp to Begin August 10

McKINNEY, Texas (July 27, 2015) – The McKinney Fire Department (MFD) and local non-profit agency, the Alliance for Elite Youth Leadership, hosted the first of two summer firefighter and emergency medical service (EMS) career exploration camps for youth entering 8th through 11th grades in early July.

The second session is scheduled for August 10-14; and, applications are being accepted through August 5.
The five-day camp focuses on firefighter and emergency medical skills, while involving attendees in a variety of activities presenting a realistic view of fire service careers.

All lessons and activities are taught by emergency services professionals, offering participants the opportunity to network and connect with individuals working in their area of interest. Prior experience and knowledge of the fire and emergency response services is not required.
Examples of camp activities include:

  • introduction to the fire & emergency medical services
  • tour of local fire stations and fire-related organizations & facilities
  • hands-on activities such as handling ladders, hoses, fire extinguishers, self-contained breathing
  • apparatus and personal protective equipment
  • career planning and preparation
  • opportunities for teamwork, problem-solving, networking and leadership development

The camp will convene daily at 8:30 a.m. at the McKinney Public Safety Building located at 2200 Taylor-Burk Drive in McKinney. Transportation to activity sites will be provided by camp instructors in the McKinney Fire Department’s 15-passenger van. Camp will conclude daily at 4:00 p.m.

Each session is limited to eight (8) campers, with applications accepted on first-come first-serve basis. There is a fee of $25 for McKinney residents and $40 for non-residents. The fee covers camp tee shirt, breakfast, lunch & snacks daily, and transportation costs. Limited scholarships are available.
