Santorum Shares Faith Journey; Called to Fight for Unborn

By Matthew Bado, TSB Staff

Presidential candidate Rick Santorum said he was called by God to protect the unborn in a message to area pastors on Wednesday morning at Bella Donna Chapel in McKinney’s Adriatica neighborhood.

“I don’t think God will bless this country if we continue to kill unborn children, said Santorum. “I am labeled ‘the social conservative’ because I dared to get up and say I’m against such an egregious act.”

The former Pennsylvania Senator shared with the invitation-only audience how he became a man of actionable faith, explaining how he won both his Congressional and Senate seats under improbable, if not impossible odds. Especially when I was in the Senate, said Santorum, I kept asking myself, Why am I here?

The answer became clear to Santorum when he got engaged with Bible studies as a Senator. He prayed, learned more about Jesus and then became active in pro-life issues, chief among them advancing a bill to ban partial birth abortions.

Santorum said he doesn’t understand “why a procedure [abortion] should be legal to cull the world of the disabled.”  He and his wife, Karen, were told by doctors that one of their children was going to die before birth.  Despite another doctor’s best efforts to surgically correct the problem in utero, the baby was born prematurely and soon died after only a few hours on earth. Years later, the Santorum’s were told their unborn daughter, Isabella, was going to be severely disabled and would not live more than a year at most. They went ahead and had the baby, who is now three, without regret.

“Bella can’t do much but she can love,” said Santorum.  “I’m not just a person of faith…my two wings are faith and reason; faith motivates me to do what’s best for our country.”

In response to a question from the audience, Santorum said we are seeing an intolerance by the secular left in our country. He cited yesterday’s U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruling that California’s ban on same sex marriage is unconstitutional as an example, saying the court is telling us that if you believe marriage should only be between a man and a woman then you’re irrational. “They want their world view imposed on us without question, and if you question them, you’re haters, you’re bigots, and you should, as a result of that, be ostracized from the public square,” he said.

The Court concluded that Proposition 8 served no purpose other than to “lessen the status and human dignity of gays and lesbians.”

Before he was rushed off to shake hands with several hundred citizens who gathered outside, Santorum said he would nominate a Supreme Court Justice who is most similar to Justice Clarence Thomas because he understands that it’s more than interpreting the words of the constitution. Context plays a part.

Of the handful of on-lookers TownSquareBuzz.com spoke to, all said they are supporting Santorum because of his position on abortion.  “I’m supporting him [Santorum] because he’s pro-life,” said Jackie Clark of Van Alstyne. “I do not believe Romney is a true conservative.”
