ReStore Offers Free Home Improvement Classes for Adults, Children

Are you a fix-it klutz?  Do minor home repairs send you calling for help?  The ReStore has the answer for you. 

North Collin County Habitat for Humanity and State Farm have teamed up to offer a year-long series of free home and yard improvement classes – and we will feed you to come!

Classes will be held at the ReStore the third Thursday of each month, culminating with a party and graduation in December.   Dinner will be served beginning at 5:30 p.m. with reservations only and all classes begin at 6 and end at 7 p.m.  Area restaurants will be providing food.

Got kids?  They are invited and will complete small projects as well.  Attendees must make reservations for each child to allow the ReStore to provide kits for each child.  Not all projects will be age-appropriate for very young children.
The curriculum will include classes on tile, painting, electric, flooring, plumbing, yard care, simple construction projects, repurposing used items, home maintenance and upkeep, furniture selection and repairs and organizing clutter. Classes, designed for novices to experts, will include demonstrations, handouts and a question-and-answer period. 

The first class, January 19, will cover tile projects including types, selection, installation of countertops, backsplashes and flooring and will feature instructor Kimberly Minchey of Mz Fix-It, a talented local home remodeler.

Other classes include:
February 16 – Electric and lighting – ceiling fans, dimmers, repairs you can make
March 22 – Painting – selecting paint, fancy finishes, preparation, wall repairs
April 19 – Your yard – watering, plant choices, lawn repair, flowers
May 17 – Home maintenance and upkeep – simple appliance repair, when to call a
June 21 – Flooring – types, installation, repairs
July 19 – Furniture – refinishing, selection, repairs, re-upholstering
August 16 – Plumbing – how it works, repairs, simple installation
September 20 – Student choice – students request a class they would like offered
October 18 – Simple construction projects including tables, repurposing used items,
hanging curtain rods, more
November 15 – Organization and clutter – storage ideas
December  20 – Graduation and diplomas, party
