It is not uncommon for many of us, at some point in our career, to want to go off and “do our own thing,” to chase dreams, to be free to let life dictate business instead of business dictating life. For Steve Matzke, his dreams are not exactly joining the circus but clearly he enjoys having three rings going at a time.
Matzke did the stockbroker thing. He enjoyed it during the good times and not so much during the bad. Retirement didn’t work out exactly as planned so he did the next best thing; he opened a Christmas tree lot. Next he added a fireworks stand and then a pumpkin patch. Finally, last summer Matzke designed and built a pirate ship and turned it into a shaved ice business, Scallywags.
Today Scallywag Refreshments has multiple outlets and Matzke’s growth plans include possible pumpkin patch expansion in McKinney. But he is certainly not limited to McKinney and he is always thinking about the next project.
Listen in as our resident pirate discusses his personal evolution by simply clicking on the video below.
If you are looking for Scallywags, look to the southeast corner of Eldorado and Ridge. But hurry because the ship sets sail after September 25. The shaved ice is sure to shiver your timber!
