Public Invited To Harold Murphy Counseling Center Dedication

McKinney ISD and the Department of Counseling at Texas A&M University-Commerce will hold dedication and ribbon cutting ceremonies for the Harold Murphy Counseling Center on Tuesday, March 22 at 1 p.m. at the Greer Annex, located at 501 Heard Street in McKinney.

In a collaborative effort between McKinney ISD and the Department of Counseling at Texas A&M University-Commerce, the Harold Murphy Counseling Center provides valuable counseling to McKinney ISD students Pre-K-12th grade and their family members who would otherwise not be able to afford professional counseling services.

“This counseling center is an outstanding benefit to parents and staff in McKinney,” said Dr. J.D. Kennedy, McKinney ISD Superintendent of Schools. “It is a great example of positive collaboration between higher education and public schools. We look forward to this partnership with Texas A&M-Commerce.”

In addition to offering affordable counseling to McKinney ISD students and parents, the center will provide counseling for school district employees.

“By providing these services conveniently located and affordable, McKinney ISD and Texas A&M University-Commerce will be able to meet the needs of families in the district in a more comprehensive way,” said Dr. Stephen Armstrong, Texas A&M University-Commerce Counseling Department Head. “As a university, we are pleased to be able to use our skill and training to give something to the community and to contribute in a meaningful way to the lives of children and adults in the McKinney area.”

The counseling center’s namesake is Mr. Harold Murphy, who began his 42-year career as a professor with the Department of Counseling at Texas A&M University-Commerce (formerly East Texas State University) in 1950. While he retired in 1992, Mr. Murphy was known across campus as a wise man who was accessible and always willing to listen and help professors and administrators from all departments in the university.

“Mr. Murphy was renowned in the field of counseling in Texas and worked hard in the 70s and 80s to get licensure for counselors,” said Armstrong. “When he passed away in September of 2010, his former students traveled to his memorial service to share their memories and speak of how he impacted their lives. By naming this counseling center after Mr. Murphy we hope to honor a man who served our department selflessly and touched the lives of so many.”
