Editor’s Note: Outlaw Outlook is TSB sports writer Mike Bruu’s continuing series about his humbling experience playing men’s softball this summer.
Oh, the blowout. In any sport it’s one of the most relaxing feelings if you are on the right side of the massacre. However, if you are the one taking the beating, you can’t help but count down the seconds until you can finally escape the misery. Luckily for McKinney’s favorite men’s softball team and our loyal legion of fans, we could rest easy after about 20 minutes into this week’s ballgame as the Outlaws defeated The Crushers 24-2.
Now I am not one to sit here and gloat about a win, especially one by 22 runs, but this was our first win of the season and one that was much needed. Our record is 1-2 and we are back in the mix for one of the four playoff spots at the end of the season. This was the kind of ballgame in which everything went right for us. If we needed a ball to find the hole up the middle, it did. If we popped one up to shallow left field and needed the ball to fall, it did. On top of that, we were able to escape about six errors in the game, defensively. If that isn’t encouraging, I don’t know what is.
We have a huge contest next Tuesday night with one of the league’s premier teams, the Spiderpigs. Yes, a spiderpig is the name Homer Simpson gives his pork friend in The Simpsons Movie. But do not take the name lightly, because if my game analysis of this team has told me anything, it is that this team is quite capable of dropping us to 1-3. With only five games left in the season, we need to practically win out to all but assure ourselves a shot at the championship and the trophy.
Now I believe it’s time for me to go get a little batting practice in and prepare for next week’s game.
