A new 7,002-foot runway at the Collin County Regional Airport at McKinney was dedicated on Friday. Federal, state and local officials delivered plenty of accolades during the ceremony at noon to commemorate the fully completion of the multi-year project. There was also a consistent message – the airport is expected to be a major force in driving Collin County’s economy.
Mayor Brian Loughmiller reminded guests that this project is the culmination of years of planning and that many individuals have worked dilligently to see the vision of this larger runway become a reality. “We see this airport as one of the main economic drivers (in the North Texas area) and it benefits every city in the county,” Loughmiller said.
Speakers were U.S. Representative Sam Johnson, Texas Transportation Commissioner Fred Underwood, FAA Regional Administrator Teresa Bruner, State Senator-Elect Ken Paxton, Collin County Judge Keith Self, Loughmiller and Collin County Airport Development Corporation board members John Wroten and Andy Cowan.
Collin County Judge Keith Self said, “This airport is the single most important asset that has the potential to drive development in North Texas.”
“I applaud you on this accomplishment,” Congressman Sam Johnson (R-Third Dist.) said.
Johnson continued to tell the audience that this project “is a perfect example of bottom up government,” with a grass roots effort to push a project from a vision to completion.
“This runway was a major part of the airport’s master planning process and represents a perfect segue to future infrastructure and business development projects. It has taken months of painstaking coordination, engineering, planning and construction, and we are proud to commemorate its completion this week,” said Airport Executive Director Ken Wiegand.
