McKinney North began defense of its 17-4A girls soccer title with a 1-0 victory over Sherman on Tuesday at MNHS. Sophomore Belicia Mendiola’s strike from about 25 yards out in the 57th minute proved to be the difference for North (5-3-1, 1-0).
The Lady Bulldogs, plagued by injuries throughout the first part of the season, suited up only 12 against the Lady Cats, but dominated except on the scoreboard. North blasted 12 shots on goal, including two by Belicia Mendiola that hit the crossbar, before Sherman managed a shot on goal.
In the junior varsity match, freshman Racquel Lopez notched her first-ever hat trick and added an assist in North’s 4-0 win. The Lady Bulldogs scored three times in the first half, despite playing three players down in the match. Beverly Torres added a goal and two assists for North.
