The five young members of the a capella group, Pentatonix, rocked the house at the McKinney Performing Arts Center Thursday night, engaging an audience in 90 minutes of sheer music delight. The fivesome put their own spin on pop songs, taking fans from Steppenwolf’s “”Born to be Wild” to Lady GaGa’s “Telephone” – all performed without any instruments – only their voices.
The season 3 winner of NBC’s “Sing-Off”in November 2011, the five member group released their debut album this year.
The three lead vocalists, Mitch, Scott and Kirsty, blended their voices for perfect harmony, backed up by beatboxer Kevin’s solid tones and Avi’s resonate bass. One of my personal favorites was the group’s cover of Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To Know”. The bass came across clear and sultry and the addition of Kirsty’s smooth, rich voice drew me in, wishing the song was longer. Even though I had heard the song hundreds of times, I felt like I was hearing it for the first time. I don’t think I was the only one. The crowd, made up of many in their teens and early twenties, rocked to the beat in their seats.
Incredible and impressive. The group is certainly well on the way to becoming a household name.
