With family members from the late Bonnie Wenk in attendance, and assisting, Mayor Brian Loughmiller officially opened Bonnie Wenk Park on Friday evening, July 19, 2013. On hand to witness the ribbon cutting were McKinney City Council members, Travis Ussery and Randy Pogue and former City Council member, Gilda Garza, along with members of the McKinney Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Board and City Manager Jason Grey and the McKinney Parks Department Director, Lamuel Randolph. Also in attendance was County Commissioner Chris Hill, a McKinney resident.
Food vendors were set up to offer a variety of items to patrons in the park. After the ribbon cutting ceremonies, the crowd was entertained by local band, Kyle Brooks & the Rhythm & Beards, sponsored by the McKinney Arts Commission.
The park has a one-of-a-kind dog park that is already a huge hit with McKinney residents and features a sloped grassy area and pavilion for open air concerts. The park also has a bike trail and jogging trail and a large lake that is in the process of being filled. The park is located at 2996 Louisiana, just west of Highway 75.
