On Monday, McKinney ISD announced a new partnership with Nissan of McKinney/McKinney Buick GMC in sponsoring the 2012/2013 Teacher of the Year program.
The announcement was made at J.W. Webb Elementary as MISD Superintendent Dr. J.D. Kennedy and Chris Godwin, Owner and Managing Partner of Nissan of McKinney/McKinney Buick GMC, paid a special tribute to Webb’s own Karen Morman by presenting her with a check for $500. Morman, who was recently named the 2012 Texas Teacher of the Year, was comletely surprised by the visit from Godwin.
Morman, who was overcome with emotion as Godwin presented her with the check, plans to give the money back to Webb. “This will come in handy to buy new books for the students’ next reading project,” Morman said.
Her next stop is representing the state in the National Teacher of the Year competition.
This is the first time in recent years MISD has partnered with a title sponsor for the local Teacher of the Year program. Dr. Kennedy praised the car dealership’s efforts for many of the district’s programs over the years and enthusiastically welcomed their participation.
“The sole purpose of the Teacher of the Year event is to acknowledge the phenomenal dedication and success of our teachers and their contributions to the children here in McKinney,” said Dr. Kennedy. “This is a perfect opportunity to recognize those who make the greatest impact in the lives of our children. Nissan of McKinney/McKinney Buick GMC’s contribution will help to fund this special event and honor a group of deserving educators.”
“We have had a long relationship with McKinney ISD,” Godwin said. “We have always supported high school sports and Booster Clubs in McKinney and been significant sponsors of the McKinney Education Foundation. For four years we have donated a car at Project Graduation for one very lucky graduate to win. We have always given to the students in McKinney and now, through Teacher of the Year, we have the venue to acknowledge and reward the hard work our teachers do for our children.”
The Teacher of the Year Program
•Each of MISD’s 31 campuses will have a Teacher of the Year elected by their peers and announced in early 2012.
•Judging committees for each the Elementary and Secondary (Middle & High Schools) winners, respectively, convene to vote on the winning candidate(s) to represent the district.
•On Thursday, March 29, 2012 the McKinney ISD Teacher of the Year Dinner will be held at the El Dorado Country Club. Each campus Teacher of the Year will be honored, and the McKinney ISD Elementary and Secondary Teachers of the Year will be announced. These individuals will qualify for the Regional Teacher of the Year competition held next summer.
This year, in addition to the traditional voting at each campus which will determine respective Teacher of the Year, Nissan of McKinney/McKinney Buick GMC will give families a chance to weigh in on their own favorites when they visit the car dealerships. Not only that, every time they vote they will be entered to win cash prizes.
Finally, in recognition of Morman’s recent honor as State of Texas Teacher of the Year, Godwin presented her with a check for $500.
“This is a particularly special partnership for us because McKinney ISD has already proven they’ve got the goods,” he said. “Two out of the last three years a MISD teacher has represented Texas as our State’s Teacher of the Year. This year Karen Morman received that honor and, on behalf of Nissan of McKinney/McKinney Buick GMC we would like to honor Ms. Morman further by presenting this check.”
