MISD Middle School Band Members Earn All-Region Honors

McKinney ISD middle school band students impressed the judges at the Region 25 All-Region Band auditions. The competition was an opportunity for middle school musicians from across the region to display their talent with the hope of being named to one of four prestigious All-Region Bands. The judges selected 59 McKinney instrumentalists for the honor.

Sixteen-hundred middle school band students converged on Rice Middle School in Plano ISD for the Region 25 competition on Nov. 9; the judges faced the daunting task of narrowing that field of performers down to only 350 students. According to Roy Renzenbrink, Director of Fine Arts at McKinney ISD, participants prepared three pieces of very difficult music and performed them in front of the judges, a challenging process that nurtured their talent and pushed them to become better musicians. Of the approximately 200 McKinney ISD band students who performed, 59 were chosen for one of the All-Region Bands — 17 percent of the total selected — marking the most successful results McKinney ISD middle school band students have enjoyed at regional competition. “Last year we had 35 students from across the district make the bands, and this year we have 59,” said Renzenbrink. “That is a 65 percent increase in students making one of the bands. It is a tribute to their hard work and their directors’ great teaching.”

Based on their overall performance, the participants were rated and then placed in one of four regional bands: Wind Ensemble, Wind Symphony, Symphonic or Concert. Wind Ensemble is the highest placement a student can attain.

The auditions included middle school band students from Sherman, Denison, Plano, Allen, Wylie, Lovejoy and other smaller North Texas school districts in Region 25.

“We are very proud of every student who tried out and extremely proud to have so many young musicians selected to be part of the Region 25 All-Region Band,” said Renzenbrink.
