The 2011 McKinney ISD REACH Mentor and Community Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon occurred Thursday, May 12 at Christ Fellowship. Over 225 mentors, volunteers, educators and district administrators were treated to a patriotic performance from the Faubian Middle School Orchestra and Choir.
Nancy Cowlishaw, the MISD Partners in Education Specialist thanked the volunteers and mentors for their dedication and very important work and boasted with pride how the McKinney program leads the country in this type of effort.
The REACH program is now in its fifth year and is currently impacting over 400 students in MISD. The program plugs in community mentors and volunteers to foster a basic sense of self-esteem and self-confidence in students, as well as provide a motivation to learn and improve personal and social skills that will reinforce the importance of an education. Reaching one child at a time is the primary goal of the program.
Superintendent, Dr. J.D. Kennedy, presented awards to twenty mentors who have participated in REACH since its inception in 2006.
