MISD Honored With Sunny Award For Web Site Transparency

McKinney ISD was one of only two school districts in the state of Texas to be awarded a Sunny Award by the Sunshine Review for stellar transparency for a governmental website. McKinney ISD was the only district in the state to receive a perfect score, or A+.

The award for website transparency adds to a collection of awards honoring McKinney ISD’s belief of open, clear communication with its community members. These recent awards include the Comptroller’s Award, Superior Achievement by the Texas’ Schools FIRST financial accountability rating system, and Five-Star Rating from the Texas Comptroller for financial performance and efficiency.

“This award came as a nice surprise. It is always nice to be honored by a third party when it relates to fiscal responsibility and fiscal transparency,” said Cody Cunningham, McKinney ISD Chief Communications Officer. “We work hard to be as transparent as possible and we have invested resources to ensure we have timely and comprehensive information posted on our website. We recognize there is always room for improvement and we look forward to continuing to publish important information related to the District’s finances, policies, programs, and schools.”

The Sunny Award is presented by the editors of Sunshine Review to honor the most transparent government websites in the nation. These outstanding websites have scored an “A” transparency grade on Sunshine Review’s Transparency Checklist. This year, only 112 of the more than 6,000 government websites ranked by Sunshine Review earned a Sunny Award.
“Sunny Award winners deserve recognition for making information available to citizens and for setting a transparency standard that all governments can, and should, meet,” said Mike Barnhart, President of Sunshine Review. “Access to information empowers every citizen to hold government officials accountable. Official accountability is the cornerstone of self government and liberty.”

Sunshine Review promotes transparency and affirmative disclosure at the state and local levels. Sunshine Review used a “10 Point Transparency Checklist” to analyze 50 state websites and more than 6,000 local government websites.

Sunshine Review announced the 112 winners of its 2nd annual “Sunny Awards” earlier this month. The 2011 awards, which more than double last year’s number, recognize the best state and local government websites in America that exceeded transparency standards. The Sunny Awards announcement preludes the launch of “Sunshine Week,” a period nationally recognized by hundreds of media and civic organizations, that celebrates the efforts of activists and the strides taken towards open government.
