The marching bands of McKinney High School, McKinney North High School and McKinney Boyd High School competed at the UIL Region 25 4A/5A Marching Band competition at Clark Stadium in Plano on Saturday, October 15. In true McKinney fashion, all three bands received Sweepstakes Ratings, the highest honor in the competition. To earn Sweepstakes recognition, a band must receive a First Division Rating from all three judges.
“I am incredibly proud of all the students and directors of all three bands,” said Roy Renzenbrink, Director of Fine Arts for McKinney ISD. “All three band programs have extremely dedicated students, parents and directors, and to have all three schools receive Sweepstakes is a tribute to the teamwork it takes in order for our students to be successful. It takes teachers with high expectations and students and parents who are willing to meet those expectations for this type of success to occur.”
With their First Division ratings, the McKinney North and McKinney High School bands are among only six from the regional competition to move on to the UIL Area B 4A Marching Competition. “To have both McKinney North and McKinney High School advance to Area B competition is a true honor for these two bands and for our district. I look forward to seeing both bands perform,” said Renzenbrick.
The competition, to be held Saturday, October 29 at Standridge Stadium in the Carrollton/Farmers Branch ISD, will provide McKinney High and McKinney Boyd with the opportunity to display their talent along with 29 other 4A bands from UIL Regions covering most of North Texas. McKinney High School Band Director Ken Ringel is looking forward to the event, “The students gave an outstanding performance at UIL, and we are excited about the possibilities that lie ahead at the Area contest!” After first-round performances in the morning, the top 10 bands will be chosen for the Area Finals on Saturday evening, and the judges will select the top six to advance to the UIL State Marching Band Competition in San Antonio on November 7-8. “It is our goal to advance to State,” said Alan Harkey, Band Director at McKinney North. “Based upon our preparation, we feel we have an excellent chance.”
Under 5A classification, McKinney Boyd will wait until next year for the opportunity to qualify for the State Marching Band Competition. UIL has structured the competition to alternate each year between classification groups. Schools classified under 1A, 2A and 4A compete this year, while 3A and 5A schools will take up the challenge in 2012/13. Boyd Band Director Joe Nunez proudly congratulates the Boyd Bronco marching band for earning the UIL Marching Band Sweepstakes Award for a sixth consecutive year.
