Through the first 31 games of the 2012 season, Baylor junior Kathy Shelton (McKinney North) is living up to preseason expectations. Shelton, a unanimous all-Big 12 selection in 2011, leads the Lady Bears with a .382 batting average. The junior outfielder is also tops in runs scored (25), hits (34), total bases (42) and stolen bases (17). The 15th-ranked Lady Bears (22-9) have lost four of five, but begin a three-game series at Big 12 opponent Missouri on Friday.
Sophomore second baseman Ashley Thomas (McKinney) is third among Georgia Tech hitters so far this season with a .307 average. Thomas, who started in 54 games as a freshman, leads the Yellow Jackets in runs (30), hits (35), and stolen bases (22). Georgia Tech (20-16) plays a three-game series at ACC foe North Carolina State on Saturday and Sunday.
Senior pitcher Ashliegh McLean (McKinney North) has appeared in 15 games so far for West Florida, posting a 6-5 record and a 3.37 ERA for the Argos. McLean also has played in 12 other games as an outfielder for West Florida, an NCAA Division II school competing in the Gulf South Conference. The Argos are 22-14 and host Alabama-Huntsville and North Alabama in doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
Lisa Licata (McKinney) has appeared in 17 games for Midwestern State. Licata, a sophomore infielder, is batting .286 for the Lady Mustangs (14-18), who play a three-game series in Denton versus Texas Woman’s University on Friday and Saturday.
