Mickey Mantle World Series: Frozen Ropes Win Opener Over Ohio Thunder

By Mike Bruu, TSB Sports Writer

All you need to know about opening day at the Mickey Mantle World Series is what time the final out was recorded Thursday morning.

At 12:22 a.m., inside Al Alford Stadium, host team Frozen Ropes Titans starting pitcher Remey Reed recorded the final out to complete a complete game, 1-hit performance in a 6-2 win over the Ohio Thunder. After four grueling games in 100-plus degrees heat that started at noon, Reed greeted the volunteers and brave fans that stayed to a dazzling pitching performance.

Reed struck out 10 Thunder hitters over seven innings, allowing two unearned runs in the first inning off a couple of Titans errors. The biggest offensive play of the night came from Titans outfielder Robert Noren, who hit a long two-run home run to left-center field in the fifth inning to put the game out of reach. His home run was the only one on day one of the tourney.

With the victory, Frozen Ropes will play Dallas Tigers Hernandez at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. The Tigers defeated Puerto Rico 13-5 in their opening game. The Titans will send to the mound Nolan Withrow to try and advance the team past the Tigers and into a bye that would keep them from having to play on Friday. In the MMWS, nothing is more important than securing byes later in the tournament, so a victory by Withrow on Thursday would be huge for Frozen Ropes

After the game, Reed was asked what the team and fans should expect from Withrow on Wednesday night. “He’ll be better than me,” said Reed without hesistation.

If that comes true, you won’t be seeing the Titans back on Al Alford Field until Saturday.
