Michele’s Weekly Fave Five: Great Food, Great Deeds, Laughter, Dance and Song

fave five 0205If you aren’t entertained this weekend in McKinney, Texas, well, that’s on you my friend. Do you like gourmet food? Do you enjoy community service? How do you feel about laughing, dancing and singing? Two-Stepping? Broadway? Since I for one love it all, to narrow down and rank this week’s Fave Five was no easy task. I so love each and every one of this week’s choices, I am tempted to put a Big Ole Number One next to all of them. The most difficult task you will find, is figuring out the best way to work all of these fine events into your weekend schedule.

Enjoy:

5. Empty Bowls – Thursday, February 6, 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. My favorite thingALWAYS is when community comes together to use their power for good. Such is the case with this particular event.  The McKinney arts community, culinary community, religious and community service communities come together once a year for Empty Bowls. The goal is to raise awareness of hunger in McKinney and to raise funds for hunger initiatives at Community Lifeline Center of McKinney. The2014 Empty Bowls event happens Thursday, February 6 1518025_505119999603817_1394295131_nbetween 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. at St. Peter’s Episcopal Churchlocated at the corner of Lamar and College St.

For a $20 donation, you receive a serving of delicious soup created and prepared by one of McKinney’s favorite eateries, and a handmade bowl. The empty bowl serves as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world due to hunger.

The soup menu includes: Carrot Curry from Gregory’s Bistro, Ham and Bean from Hamm’s Custom Meats, Chicken and Dumpling from The Pantry Restaurant, White Beans and Collard Greens from Patina Green. Also, Loaded Baked Potato from Rick’s Chophouse, Tortilla soup from San Miguel Grill, and Taco Soup form SNUG on the Square. Can’t stay? Soup to go is also an option. Not able to get out at all? You can still play – check out the online auction of gorgeous bowls handcrafted by McKinney artisans.

Four Funny Females at McKinney Performing Arts Center, Saturday, February 8 at 8 p.m. Lucky me, I attended the opening performance of Four Funny Females a couple of weeks ago. I can tell you, these girls bring the ha-ha. Now in their 8th season, Jodi Hadsell, Sherry Belle, Laura Bartlett, and Linda Stogner still know how to delight a McKinney audience. At this writing, seating is limited, so go ahead and grab your tickets to the Saturday, February 8 show here.

3. Mark Chesnutt at Hank’s Texas Grill, Friday, February 7 – Full disclosure – THIS happy clapping fan girl has danced about a thousand miles or so, two steps at a time of course, to more favorite Mark Chesnutt songs Mark-Chesnuttthan column space allows. I could probably write an entire column on the greatness of “Blame It On Texas,” or on his rendition of “Rollin’ With the Flow.” And I most certainly have a thing or two to say about one of my favorite country songs of all times, “Bubba Shot the Jukebox Last Night.” No matter how many times I hear that song, I still want to laugh out loud, sing along, and dance, all entirely possible Friday, February 7 atHank’s Texas Grill. Anytime I recommend Hank’s, it is always with the caveat, get there early, enjoy a meal and grab a seat. General admission seating gets a bit cozy, especially when big names like Mark Chesnutt come to town. Also, Hank’s doesn’t normally post an exact showtime, which ups the challenge level a bit, but I think it’s fairly safe to say headliners hit the stage in the 9:ish-10:ish range. Grab your tickets here.

2. Enjoy Live Theater. It’s a great weekend for live theater in McKinney this weekend. Why? Because the talent pool in our fair city is large and deep and swimming with triple threats making names for themselves on our stages and beyond. This weekend, enjoy both the McKinney Youth Theatre’s presentation of “Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” as well as the McKinney Boyd Broadway Bronco’s presentation of “Disney’s Beauty And The Beast.”

BB_3The MYT’s presentation takes place February 7-9 and 14-16 at the Heard-Craig Hall located at 306 N. Church St. Click here for tickets, or call 972-422-2575.

The McKinney Boyd High School Broadway Broncos performance can be seen February 6-8 at 7 p.m. at the MBHS Auditorium located at 600 N. Lake Forest. Tickets are $15/$12 with student i.d. For more information check out their website atBroadwayBroncos.com.
