Michele’s Fave Five: Memorial Day Weekend In McKinney

By Michele Stevens Bernard, TSB Lifestyle Editor

Memorial Day in McKinney is one of the most fun weekends of the year. From Friday until Monday, the community calendars are jam packed with entertainment opportunities and community gatherings for the whole family. The only hard part about it, is narrowing down the choices of things to do. Fret not. I’m here to help you scope out your options as you consider your plans. Check out my Fave Five fun things to do in McKinney this weekend, then keep reading to see what else is happening.

1. Bike The Bricks – Friday, May 24 – As I said in my Bike the Bricks preview article Tuesday: This event is one of the most exciting events to zoom through downtown McKinney. With action so close and speeds up to 40 mph, spectators of this “crit” race in historic downtown will feel the wind generated by the cyclists racing by blowing their hair back.

This free, family-friendly event brought to us by the City of McKinney and McKinney Velo happens this Friday, May 24, with cyclers warming up beginning at 3:30 p.m. With more than 500 cyclers from around the state and beyond competing for $20,000 plus prize money, it’s sure to be an exciting night for the thousands of guests expected to visit the historic downtown area. Festival hours are from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m., so there will be more than enough time to enjoy the races and all this event has to offer. Click here to read my entire preview of the exciting race.

2. Zane Williams CD Release Extravaganza – Saturday – 8 p.m. – McKinney Performing Arts Center Zane is having a party y’all and we are on the guest list! Our favorite Texas Troubadour is celebrating the release of his fourth studio album, Overnight Success with a night of music with his favorite fans,  guest musicians and special guest performers. Zane will be joined by the great Tom Faulkner and amazing Kylie Rae Harris, sharing songs and stories behind the songs that make us all confirmed Zaniacs. Click here to check out the video interview I did with Zane last week when he joined me “In The Studio” at’s downtown McKinney studio.

3. Smiles Charity Concert – Sunday – 5 p.m. – 10 p.m. – Adriatica – Each Memorial Day Weekend the Smiles Charity brings to McKinney a spectacular free concert featuring well known local and national acts. While the concert is free, donations are happily accepted, as is the purchase of raffle tickets for some amazing prizes. Proceeds help build homes for wounded military heroes. For the whole scoop, click here to read all the details.

4. Pecan Grove Cemetery Memorial Day Tribute – Monday – 9:30 a.m. – This is one of the most inspirational events in McKinney, and is this week’s hidden gem. Now in the 29th year,  the annual Pecan Grove Cemetery Memorial Day tribute is one of those uniting events that brings a community together in the memory of those who served in the armed forces and who are no longer with us. Each time I’ve attended, I have been filled with a sense of patriotism, gratitude and community pride. The McKinney Community Band will provide music beginning at 9:30 a.m. with the program featuring honor guards following at 10 a.m. Between commentary from community and national leaders including the mayor and our United States congressmen, the tribute will feature the presentation of colors, a rider less horse tribute roll call, taps, and a WWII aircraft flyover. Veterans are encouraged to wear their uniforms and guests are invited to bring their lawn chairs, and an American Flag. I also recommend bringing an umbrella, bottled water and a fan, as experience has taught me, all will be used and appreciated. Pecan Grove Cemetery is located at the corner of Industrial Blvd. and Hwy. 5 in McKinney.

Veterans of the Texas Revolution, the Mexican War, and every war thereafter are laid to rest at Pecan Grove Cemetery.

5. Opening Day of Barbecue Season – Memorial Day Weekend – Day and time varies from home to home, but the fact remains the same, this 3-day holiday is the official, unofficial kick-off weekend of backyard chilling and grilling. Enjoy your friends, enjoy your family, enjoy your fire. If you need inspirations, click here to read about my recent trip down the Texas Barbecue Trail.
