Michele Stevens Bernard: Carpe Diem Y’all

Let’s start hydrating now people, because Second Saturday, August 13th, is upon us.  The list of fun stuff to do around town is long, and worthy of sweat-breaking-out-and-aboutery.  May I recommend we get our day started with an ice-cold morning beverage and a parade?  The McKinney High School Royal Pride Marching Band will kick off the day at 8:00 a.m. in the McKinney High School Parking lot, where they will conduct their 10th Annual March-A-Thon with a calf-toning-five-miler.  The 160 strong band will trek up the Valley Creek Trail and wind its way through the Eldorado neighborhood to Tom Thumb on Eldorado Parkway where they will perform the first of three concerts and reviews.  .  The second concert will be at Market Street around 11:30 a.m. and the third will be at the grand opening of In Touch Credit Union at 6375 W. Eldorado Parkway.

After cheering on the band, let’s cool off by touring McKinney’s Historic District by air-conditioned trolley.  Learn more about these beautiful homes, the history of their owners, and the history of McKinney during this hour and 30 minute rolling review.  The tour leaves from Chestnut Square Historic Village at 11:00 a.m. Pick-up is also available at the McKinney Performing Arts Center.  Reservations are recommended, as space on the trolley is limited.  Call 972-562-8790 to save your space.  Tickets are $10 for adults or $7 for students, seniors and military.

Return to the downtown area just in time for lunch.  Choose from any one of the many fine eateries.  After lunch, whether you choose to shop the square, or take it back to the house for an ice-pack and an afternoon siesta, whatever you do, make it a point to do downtown after dark, as the Second Saturday Art Walk will be super fun this weekend.

It’s Opening Night at the Laura Moore Fine Art Studios.  Moore will present the much anticipated juried art exhibition from her annual open call to artists.  This year’s theme is “The Edge”, and features over 100 works of art from 60 artists.  I had the opportunity to speak with several of the artists this week, and their excitement has me on the edge of my seat counting the minutes till Saturday.  If you’ve not been to an opening at Laura Moore’s, this is the one to go to.  Trust me – it will be quite a treat.  The reception begins at 7:00 p.m. and ends at 10:00 p.m.

Speaking of treats, Anne Royer will be the feature artist at Orison’s Saturday night.  She will paint live on-site, another must see to believe experience for downtown patrons.  Anne’s work is bold and gorgeous and Anne is bold and gorgeous when she works.  Do yourself a favor, and drop by for the show.

Finally, do not let this weekend pass without checking out the newest music venue, Grotto Live, which opens Thursday, August 11th. Located next door to Sauce on the Square, Grotto Live will feature live classic and alt rock, fresh cocktails, and an uber-cool intimate ambiance.  What better way to re-hydrate and toast the end of the day on a Second Saturday night in McKinney?
Carpe Diem Y’all! Michele
