The world-famous United States Naval Academy Gospel Choir is slated to perform this Sunday, Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. at Stonebridge United Methodist Church. Counted in their numbers will be none other than McKinney’s own Amber Lowman. The USNA Gospel Choir, under the direction of Ms. Karla Scott, will present this free concert to the public as a part of their Veteran’s day tour.
Lowman, a 2011 graduate of McKinney High School, is currently a 3/C sophomore at the United States Naval Academy. She is majoring in Economics and enjoys active participation in life at the academy. As she did as a student at MHS, Lowman maintains a strong GPA. In her first year, she was selected to the “Dants” list. This past summer she participated in SHAPE training, enabling her to now teach harassment training to incoming plebes.
For her summer cruise, Lowman spent a month in Hawaii as a part of RIMPAC 2012, the world’s largest international maritime warfare exercise. She is currently a candidate for class Vice President. During football season, she can be found on the sidelines as a member of the USNA spirit squad Team Awesome. Lowman is the daughter of Bruce and Sita Lowman of McKinney.
This will be Lowman’s second Veteran’s Day tour with the choir as she was selected for last year’s Chicago area tour as well. She also performed in Atlanta for the Martin Luther King holiday weekend, and in Miami/Tampa during the choir’s spring break tour. Lowman was a featured soloist at the USNA Organ Concert and Musical Review and was selected to play the lead in their spring musical, South Pacific, as “Bloody Mary.”
Currently, Lowman is one of an elite group of midshipmen chosen to sing the National Anthem at various events and venues. She is also one of the two featured singers with the USNA Jazz Band.
“As a mom, it was both a pride and a worry [for me] when Amber accepted an appointment to the United States Naval Academy,” says Lowman’s mother Sita. “Now that she is in her second year, after seeing her excel at so many things, I am more and more proud of her every day. Listening to her sing with the Gospel Choir brings both a sense of patriotic pride, as well as an uplifted spirit as they are a great representation of the Word. Folks of all ages will enjoy this concert. This is an amazing opportunity for the McKinney community to come out and pay their respects to our US military and to honor our veterans.”
