It’s that time of year again. McKinney civic leaders, community volunteers, and businessmen and women are dusting off their dictionaries and asking their kids to quiz them (for a change) as they prep for the upcoming McKinney Education Foundation’s Spelling Bee for Scholarships on Thursday, February 23rd from 11:15 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Eldorado Country Club.
According to Margaret Harsch, MEF Operations Director, last year’s event raised over $14,000 and MEF is hoping to do as well, or better, with the 2012 fundraiser. Teams of three are given 20 nail-biting seconds to agree on the correct spelling of a given word or their cheering section can buy them Mulligans, which can be used to pass difficult words on to other teams in hopes of disqualifying the competition. Harsch states, “You don’t have to know how to spell in order to ‘play’. It’s really just about having fun while raising money for a good cause!”
In 2011, it was the Radical Reciters (sponsored by Raytheon and whose fans won the Spirit Stick) and the Mathsters of the Universe team (sponsored by Parker Mathematics Consulting) who were neck-and-neck up until the bitter end. Ultimately, Mathsters of the Universe (Phil Parker, Pastor Tommy Brumett, Mark David) prevailed, but Raytheon is back, eager to win the 2012 edition.
2012 Table and team sponsors include: McKinney Independent School District, MEDC, Neil Sperry’s Garden Magazine, Bobby Mefford with Tate Financial Group, Heritage Eye Center, McKinney Sunrise Rotary Club, Academics Plus, City of McKinney, Parker Mathematics, Encore Wire, McKinney Fire Department, Minnis Family Endowment, Calloways Nursery, and FC Dallas. Additional sponsors: Nissan of McKinney as the Elimination Gong Sponsor, Whole Foods Market at the Village at Fairview is the Audience Spell Sponsor and Diggin’ It as the centerpiece sponsor.
Don’t have a team, but want to come out for the fun? Join us for lunch – individual tickets are only $30 and tables of 10 are $300! It’s a great event for networking while supporting a worthy cause. Call MEF at 469-742-6313 for more information, or to reserve your seats or tables by Tuesday, February 21st!
