In January 1991, the McKinney Chamber of Commerce established the McKinney Education Foundation (MEF) to coordinate scholarship awards that local businesses were giving each year to McKinney High School graduates. Over the years, MEF simplified the donation process and made award presentations more equitable to the graduates. In 2010, MEF awarded over $300,000 in scholarships to MISD graduating seniors, and now in its 19th year and less than two weeks away from the event, MEF’s Scholarship Committee is working hard to finalize the list of recipients for Awards Night on Friday, May 20th at Christ Fellowship McKinney.
The scholarship process begins each January as MISD seniors apply for MEF scholarships. The MEF Scholarship Committee then works for several months reviewing applications and recommendations, interviewing candidates, and then matching donors and scholarships with recipients. Potential awardees and their parents are on pins and needles as they expect to hear this week whether they will receive a scholarship at next Friday’s ceremony.
Meanwhile, MEF Advisors located on each of the three McKinney high school campuses are busy wrapping-up another stellar year of financial assistance. The MEF Advisors’ job is to not only encourage students to dream about and plan for college while guiding families through the process, but to help find additional financial assistance for students. In 2010, the MEF Advisors (funded by a select group of local business known as Dream Builders) helped McKinney graduates find and receive over $8 million in funds for college!
LaTonya Donaldson, a teacher at Faubion Middle School had this to say about her experience working with Cindy Monogue, MEF Advisor at MHS, “I was the first in my family to attend college, and I had no idea what I was doing. I made some horrible decisions and missed out on several opportunities that may have saved me thousands of dollars and countless hours of time. However, I vowed I would do all I could to help my children. Cindy has been that help I needed. She answers my questions, no matter how trivial they are, and if she can’t provide an answer, she points me in the right direction. I just wanted to let you know what a treasure Cindy is!”
