McKinney’s Young Actors Guild Prepares for TNT Conference with Student Directed Production

By Nikki Darling, TSB Staff

The cast of the show Tick Talk gathered at the McKinney Performing Arts Center on Monday night to rehearse for their up and coming performance at local theatre conference TNT (Texas Nonprofit Theatres).

The group of high school students is part of the McKinney Repertory Theatre’s Young Actors Guild. And they’ve got quite a summer ahead.

This is the second time in the history of the Young Actors Guild that it will perform outside of McKinney and in front of other theatre groups and industry professionals. This time the actors are able to take ownership of the show as it is being put together entirely by students. With rehearsals multiple times a week, the students prepare to embark on June 7 to share their love and passion for theatre.

Student director Daniel Holland gathered the group around his director’s table Monday to go over what the kids would be rehearsing that day. As a sophomore at McKinney North High School, Daniel gets a shot at directing his peers and classmates. “Making sure that everything like blocking, lights, sound and costumes are ready can be overwhelming at times, but for the most part the show has come together very well, and its been an enjoyable experience,” says Daniel on his experience as a student director.

Cast member Melanie Campbell, a junior at McKinney North, says that “the learning process is much different with a director that’s close to your age. But since we are close to the same age he understands us better than an adult might.”

The cast members worked hard during their rehearsal, running scenes over and over to perfect them for performing at the conference. “I’m excited to be seeing other shows (at the conference) and learning more about theatre while I’m there,” said McKinney North sophomore Baxter Pitt.

McKinney Boyd freshman Patti Hogarth is also looking forward to the TNT Conference, which will take place in Lewisville.

“We are going to be able to stay there for a few days during the conference where there will be many other theatre groups performing,” she said. “I’m really excited to have some bonding time with the cast.”
