Xavier Jackson, a 13-year old incoming 8th grader at Cockrill Middle School, culminated his long 2011 track season by winning the gold medal with a time of 14.47 in the Sub-Youth Boys 100-meter hurdles on Thursday (8/4/11) at the 2011 AAU Junior Olympic Games in New Orleans, La.
The time was not Xavier’s best (14.17), but was good enough to beat the top two ranked AAU hurdlers in the nation on a hot and humid day and earn Xavier an All-American designation.
Xavier also competed in the 200-meter hurdles, where he ran a personal best of 26.68 on Wednesday (8/3/11), and won the bronze medal in the event.
Xavier’s long road to the Junior Olympics included an undefeated season in the 110-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles, while a member of the Cockrill Middle School Track Team under Coach Wallace. This was followed by summer track, where Xavier competed “Unattached” in nine AAU and USATF sanctioned track meets and won 14 gold medals and 1 silver medal in the hurdle events, while qualifying to both the AAU Junior Olympics and USATF Junior Olympics.
Xavier’s accomplishments are the result of his God-given talent, hard work on the track, but also to the refinements and guidance provided by his parents and coaches Joshua Wallace, John Williams, Gerald Finney and Larry Kelly.
