McKinney’s Hunter Mahan, U.S. team win The Presidents Cup

McKinney’s Hunter Mahan never fell behind on the final day of The Presidents Cup to beat Jason Day, 5 and 3, to earn the first point for the U.S. Team on Sunday at Royal Melbourne.

Mahan, a 1999 McKinney High graduate, closed out Day with a 13-foot putt for birdie at the 15th hole. The win was his fourth in five matches this week at the Presidents Cup.

Mahan, 29, won the first hole with a par and never looked back — building a 5-up advantage through eight holes. Day shot 44 with five bogeys and two double bogeys on the front nine holes.

Captain’s pick Tiger Woods made the putt that scored the deciding point to lead the U.S. team over the Internationals at Royal Melbourne for The Presidents Cup.  The U.S. captured six of the 12 final-day matches to win, 19-15.

Woods had trouble putting going into the final day, but sank the ones he needed Sunday to edge Aaron Baddeley, 4 and 3.

“I played well all week,” Woods said. “Unfortunately, I didn’t make putts. I hit putts well, but they just weren’t going in. Caught a lot of lips the first three days, first four matches. Today was a different deal. I, for some reason, felt it and they were pouring right in there.”
