McKinney’s Holiday Traditions: Crump’s Garden Poinsettias are `Unique by Nature’

While McKinney kicks off the holiday season with the wildly popular Dickens of a Christmas, and the Chestnut Square Holiday Home Tour, there are many other offerings, traditions, and folks unique to our fair city. For instance, where else can one find greenhouses filled to brimming with over 55,000 beautiful florist quality Christmas poinsettias each year? McKinney’s own Crump’s Garden, that’s where.

Located in far north McKinney, and west of Hwy. 75, Crump’s Garden was founded by Brice and Willie Crump and opened for business in 1939. Originally located on McKinney’s downtown square, the family moved to their current location in 1977, where one will find their shop, as well as, 70 greenhouses onsite.

According to 4th generation grower, Bill Crump, the family began the tradition of growing poinsettias in the 1960’s. “It started out as a side business to our regular business,” says Crump, “Poinsettias were pretty labor intensive then, as far as getting them to flower by Christmas. In the late 70’s though, poinsettia producers started developing different varieties that didn’t require as much time to flower.”

By the 80’s and into the 90’s Crump’s saw their greenhouses fill with the popular holiday plant, their numbers soaring, producing upwards of 125,000 cuttings.

Each year, the Crump family opens their greenhouse doors and invites the public into their colorful world. This year’s open house was held on Sunday, December 4th, when, despite the cold, rainy day, the family welcomed a steady stream of visitors, photographers, and even one distinguished guest who traveled all the way in from the North Pole.

“Even with the weather, we stayed busy all afternoon,” says Crump.

Despite the fact that newer varieties of poinsettia require less time to flower by December 25th, according to Crump, April 1st marks the beginning of the poinsettia growing season at their place. Plants grow through the summer. By August 1st they have cuttings for their production.

Even with the hard work, and inevitable December rush associated with outfitting McKinney and beyond with this popular seasonal beauty, Crump takes it all in stride.

“When it’s something you grow up with, you know when to relax, and try to catch your breath, and when to get ready and go. As long as we have a good crop, it’s usually a very Merry Christmas around here.”

Crump’s Garden is located at 3163 FM 543 in McKinney. They are opened Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
