Since its debut in 1967, the national red and black YMCA logo has become one of the most widely recognized logos in the world: a symbol of community youth programs as well as a place to get healthy through various fitness programs.
On Thursday, Jan. 19, the YMCA of McKinney, 300 Ridge Road, unveiled the new, fresh, contemporary and more colorful logo, which is proudly displayed on the front of the building. These changes will provide a fresh look to the YMCA logo but will retain the strength of the inverted triangle to connect the Y to their 160 year legacy.
Ys all over the country have five years to incorporate the gradual change in the public face of the YMCA through an expanded national and local branding initiative.
“The new logo incorporates the YMCA inverted triangle to represent a more contemporary look to the familiar logo recognized for the last 40 years. A variety of colors will be used to represent our diversity and our scope of services,”said Bill Markell, interim Director of the McKinney Family YMCA and Vice President of Operations at the Frisco Family YMCA.
The mission of the YMCA remains the same: putting Christian values into practice through programs that build healthy spirit mind and body for all. The Y will continue to use that powerful message as the foundation of their work, which will closely align the impact of that work while still focusing our core strength which is to help individuals reach their fullest potential as we help them grow physically, spiritually and mentally.
Why re-brand? YMCA leadership has recognized a widening gap between the YMCA family and the public with regard to understanding the impact of the YMCA. While staff and leadership knows intimately how YMCA programs affect lives, the vast majority of people outside of the “YMCA family” believe the Y to be more focused on activities than truly driven by a cause, Markell said.
Markell pointed out that the Y, as an association, felt the need to go out and reintroduce themselves to the public because when people were asked what the organization does, they really didn’t know.
“People think we are a gym, swim organization and we are so much more than that,” Markell said.
The McKinney Family YMCA works to strengthen the foundation of the community through nurturing the development of kids, energizing healthy living for all people and stimulating social responsibility in the city’s neighborhoods.
