The city of McKinney will have a local hockey team to cheer for beginning later this year. It will compete in a nationwide developmental hockey league, the North American 3HL, which is entering its fourth season.
The NA3HL has 22 teams across the country and will be divided into four divisions. One of its new teams for 2013-14, it announced Thursday, will be the McKinney Warriors, which will play out of the Dr Pepper StarCenter in McKinney. It was announced by the league in this release.
The McKinney squad will be one of four teams in the South Division, along with the Dallas Jr. Stars, who will play in Euless’ Dr Pepper StarCenter; the Sugar Land Imperials, who will play at the Sugar Land Ice Center; and the Topeka RoadRunners, who will play at the Kansas Expo Centre.
Other NA3HL teams are located in places such as Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago, Michigan, Minnesota and more.
McKinney’s coach will be Jeff Ramsay. The league’s website had this to say about Ramsay: “After growing up in Canada and playing junior hockey, Ramsay moved behind the bench where he coached midget teams in Winnipeg and Toronto. In 1999, Ramsay moved to the Dallas area serving as the GM of the then newly opened Grapevine Mills Ice Rink where he was instrumental in the creation and growth of the original Lone Star Wolves Travel Association over the course of the next eight seasons. During the 2008-09 season, Ramsay coached his 16U Tier II team to three tournament titles, a State Championship and was a finalist at the Rocky Mountain District tournament. A year later in 2009-10, Ramsey led his Ice Jets 18U Tier II squad to a State and National Championship in the 2A division. He has been with the Allen Americans youth organization for the past three seasons.”
MORE ABOUT THE EXPANDED NA3HL
From the league’s website:
The NA3HL will be entering its fourth season in 2013-14 and serves as one of the top training grounds in the country by providing the best coaching, exposure and developmental vehicles available for student-athletes in its classification. In 2013, the NA3HL’s North Iowa Bulls solidified this by winning the USA Hockey Tier III Junior National Championship. In addition to the dozens of players who moved up to play in the NAHL during the 2012-13 season, 30 NA3HL players were either tendered or drafted to NAHL teams throughout the 2012-13 season.
