The University of Texas at Arlington played host to the 2012 USA Youth Outdoor Track & Field Championships over the weekend, in what proved to be a memorable event for Xavier Jackson.
On Saturday, June 30, the 14-year-old hurdler from McKinney participated in the preliminary heats for the Youth Boys division of the 200m hurdles and 100m hurdles. And what a ride it was.
In the 200m hurdles, Xavier ran in the first heat and won his heat with a time of 26.26 seconds, the second fastest time in the preliminaries, advancing the young hurdler to the Finals on Sunday.
In the prelims of the 100m hurdles, Xavier was placed in the same heat with the No. 1-ranked hurdler in the nation, D’Anthony Walcott of San Diego, CA’s Mercury Track Club. With Xavier ranked as the No. 2 Youth Boys 100m hurdler in the nation, this had the makings of an exciting race. It was not anticipated that theose top two hurdlers would pair up until the finals, but fate had its way and an exciting race was under way as soon as the starter’s gun went off. As the two hurdlers made their way down the track and over the hurdles, Xavier had a slight lead through the 6th hurdle and then he clipped it with his trail leg and D’Anthony wasted no time edging out Xavier at the finish line with a time of 13.77 seconds to Xavier’s 13.79 seconds. The race between these two elite young hurdlers was decided by two one hundredth of a second with a rematch in the final looming for Sunday.
On Sunday, July 1, the final of the 200m hurdles was held with D’Anthony and Xavier lined up in adjacent lanes. When the starter’s gun went off, the two hurdlers quickly started making up the stagger on the rest of the field. Moreover, Xavier began to overtake D’Anthony coming out of the curve with a little more than 100 meters to go. By the fourth hurdle, Xavier was in the lead and then chopped his step before going over the hurdle. That slight hesitation was all the experienced D’Anthony needed and overtook Xavier down the backstretch as the two raced for the finish line with D’Anthony beating Xavier to the finish line with a personal best time of 25.51 seconds. Xavier crossed the finish line in his own personal best time of 25.75 seconds.

A couple of hours after the 200m hurdles and the subsequent awards ceremony, Xavier and D’Anthony lined up side by side for the 100m hurdles final. Number one and number two in the nation would once again battle it out, this time for the title of Youth Outdoor Champion in the 100m hurdles. The starter’s gun went off and Xavier wasted no time getting an early lead that he maintained start to finish. Xavier came across the finish line in a blazing and personal best time of 13.55 seconds to D’Anthony’s very fast 13.71 seconds.
These two fine hurdlers came to compete and brought out the best in each other – that is what competition is all about. Both did their communities proud and each brought home a gold and silver national championship medal.
