McKinney Sunrise Rotary Recognizes Flag Partners

By TSB Community Contributor

When the Rotary Club of McKinney Sunrise Club started the flag lease program over 15 years ago with a limited number of flags leased to homes in Stonebridge Ranch, Fred Bahrenburg and Col. Paul Yeager had no idea the concept would take off and become a major fundraiser for the club by providing hundreds beautiful U.S. flags in west McKinney.  From a small beginning, the club leased over 1,438 flags last season in 2012, which is a 36 percent increase over the past five years.

The McKinney Sunrise Rotary Club cannot do this project alone, so they enlist the assistance of four Boy Scout troops and a family representing the McKinney Area Home School Association to deliver and retrieve the flags for each holiday.  On January 23, Gary Taylor, President, and Bill Smith and Jeff Caserotti, Co-Vice Presidents for Flags, recognized the Flag Coordinators from each organization at a breakfast meeting at Eldorado Country Club with checks totaling $10,300 for the 2012 season and certificates of appreciation for their service.  Those recognized included:

• Lisa Zavala, BSA 496 Flag Coordinator and Charles Meachum, Assistant Scoutmaster for BSA 496
• Tom Fris, BSA 303 Flag Coordinator
• Brent Brown, BSA 2150 representative for Mary Brown, Troop Treasurer, and Laliya Agrawal, BSA 2150 Flag Coordinator
• Pat LaCour, BSA 531 Flag Coordinator
• Julie Marshall, Flag Coordinator for the McKinney Area Home School Association and family – Natalie, Nadine, Nathan, Nash and Naomi

Also recognized were Lt. Eddie Dent and Deputy Ella Even, (above) law enforcement officers from the Collin County Sheriff’s Department, who provide assistance with the S.C.O.R.E program to assemble new flags and clean and repair current flags.

The club is currently taking flag orders for the 2013 season which includes Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Labor Day and Veterans Day.  In recognition of 9-11, the flags are flown from Labor Day until September 12.  For additional information about the flag lease program, contact Chuck Koehler, Flag Secretary at 214-449-6868.
