McKinney Sunrise Rotary Club Prepares for 17th Flag Lease Season

For the past 16 years, the McKinney Sunrise Rotary Club has sold U.S. flag leases primarily in west McKinney. The community service project was started by former McKinney City Councilman and the club’s first president, Col. (ret.) Paul Yeager, who passed away this past year. The purpose was to honor or memorialize U.S. servicemen and women who were currently serving or who had served in the Armed Services; however, all community members are encouraged to fly a U.S. Flag as a display of patriotism and pride in our nation.

The project has been so successful that it has become a major source of club funds for local and global charities that address underserved youth and the elderly, literacy, clean water, shelter, mobility, medical, immunizations, and other health and humanity needs. Through it’s youth initiatives, the funds also support the Rotary Youth Exchange program, Interact clubs at McKinney North and McKinney Boyd high schools, the formation of a Rotaract Club at Collin College, and the 4-Way Test Speech Contest.

From small beginnings 16 years ago, the McKinney Sunrise Rotary Club in 2011 sold 1,380 U.S. flag leases to homes and businesses. The club also provided flags for ceremonies at the Veterans Memorial at Craig Ranch and the downtown McKinney Christmas Parade. The club purchases all materials, maintains a database of McKinney addresses, assembles the flags, stores them, maintains a web site for advertising, and prepares the sites to receive the flags. Local Boy Scout Troops and other partners are assigned routes to deliver and retrieve the flags for the five holidays of Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Labor Day and Veterans Day. To memorialize those who died in the 9-11 attack, the flags are also flown from Labor Day until Sept 11.

Flag orders within our established boundaries in west McKinney are now being accepted online for the 2012 season beginning with Memorial Day weekend through Veterans Day at <www.mckinneysunriserotary.org>. You have the convenience of paying for your flag lease with a credit card through our PayPal account.

Please review the information to determine if your home or business address is within our service boundaries in west McKinney, which are south of University Drive, west of Central Expressway, north of McKinney Ranch Road, and east of Custer Road. We serve a few subscribers in far north McKinney and east McKinney when there are enough homes in neighborhoods to justify a route.

If we receive your order before April 30, 2012, the cost for five flag holidays will be $40. After that date the cost will be $45 per flag lease. For those who prefer to write a check, go online at <www.mckinneysunriserotary.org> to download and print the order form. Mail the completed form along with your check before April 30 for $40 to: McKinney Sunrise Rotary Club, Attn: Flag Lease Program, PO Box 2244, McKinney, TX 75070. If you have questions, contact Sandi Froese at <swfroese@sbcglobal.net> or Chuck Koehler at <chakoe@aol.com>.

The Rotary Club of McKinney Sunrise meets each Wednesday at Eldorado Country Club for a breakfast meeting at 7:30 AM. For more information about the club and it’s programs, please contact President Stacey Kemp at staceyj0219@aol.com.
