McKinney Receives National Main Street Recognition

Submitted by Anna Clark, City of McKinney

McKinney has been commended for successful annual progress as a designated Main Street community by the Texas Historical Commission’s (THC) Texas Main Street Program (TMSP). McKinney Main Street will be further recognized as Nationally Accredited by the National Main Street Center, a subsidiary of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, at the National Main Street conference in New Orleans in April.

Cities chosen as National Main Street Cities achieved above average performance in 10 categories. The selection criteria focus on planning, staff and volunteers, preservation ethic, training and program assessment. McKinney has been recognized for eight years in a row.

“The Main Street program and downtown as a whole has tremendous support throughout the City of McKinney. The business community, volunteers and the more than 130 businesses in historic district ensure that downtown remains a vital element in what makes McKinney truly unique by nature,” said Main Street Director Ty Lake.

Since 1980, the National Main Street Center has been working with communities across the nation to revitalize historic commercial areas. The McKinney Main Street mission is to maintain and enhance a vibrant downtown area through economic redevelopment, design, organization and promotion as part of McKinney’s Main Street Program.
