McKinney North needed a little luck and some last-minute heroics, but the Bulldogs clinched second place in District 17-4A with a 2-1 shootout win over Prosper on Tuesday at North.
The Bulldogs (11-7-0, 8-3) trailed through much of the boys soccer contest and seemed frustrated on offense in the second half. But a hand ball whistle with just over two minutes remaining set up the dramatic finish. Senior Jacob Diaz headed Morgan Dizney’s free kick from 28 yards out past Eagle keeper Logan Wymes in the 78th minute and North forced the shootout.
Even the shootout looked dicey — for a moment — for the Bulldogs. Mitchal Vincent minded the net for Prosper in the best-of-five penalty kick period, and when he knocked away two consecutive attempts, North faced a must-score scenario. Senior keeper Justin Bach came out of goal and kept the Bulldogs alive with a successful strike past Vincent.
After Ronald Rivas missed for the Eagles, senior Diego Burgos secured the win with a strong kick in the right side of the net. Despite the loss, Prosper (13-7-0, 4-5-0) still has the upper hand in finishing fourth and qualifying for the playoffs.
Against North, the Eagles took a 1-0 lead when Diego Ordonez and Dalton Knipe took advantage of a misplayed defensive sweep by the Bulldogs. For the next 62 minutes North struggled to mount any serious shots on goal.
The Bulldogs also won the junior varsity match, 1-0. Will Ashun’s breakaway goal in the second minute stood up for North.
