A season-high 15 strikeouts from freshman Celeste Verdolivo and Bailey Florence’s two-run RBI single proved to be the difference on Friday, as McKinney North held off J.J. Pearce, 2-0, in a District 10-4A softball contest at North.
Florence, batting ninth in the order, ended a frustrating night at the plate for the Bulldogs when her two-out, bloop single into shallow right brought home Ashleigh Ahlborn and Raven Gutierrez in the fourth inning. North (6-6-1, 2-0) had left the bases loaded in the third and had missed a scoring chance when no runners tagged up on Alli Lindsey’s fly ball to left.
Pearce starter Madison Boyer and her changeup baffled the Bulldogs for much of the game, but her pitch count (129) and wildness (eight walks) gave North the opportunities it needed.
Verdolivo, meanwhile, did not allow a baserunner past second base and scattered just three hits. She struck out the side in the second and fourth innings and had two strikeouts in three other innings.
The Bulldogs return home on Tuesday, hosting Heath before Friday’s crosstown showdown at McKinney.
