Stephens, employed by the department since 2006, worked as a Special Education teacher prior to employment with MFD. Recognizing the need for fire and life safety education for students in the special needs population, he developed a program that was offered throughout the fall semester in McKinney ISD elementary schools, as well as Frisco and Prosper elementary schools located in McKinney. The program was embraced enthusiastically by the districts and received positive feedback.
“Sean is an outstanding employee who is dedicated to offering every citizen the highest level of customer service,” said Fire Chief Danny Kistner. “His insight into the needs of this special group of students allowed the McKinney Fire Department to establish a national standard in community outreach.”
Other awards for the evening included the Distinguished Unit Award, the Fire Chief’s Award and the Medal of Commendation. In addition to employees, several citizens were recognized for acts and services contributing to the mission of the fire department.
“This was a wonderful evening,” said MFD spokeswoman Stacie Durham. “With financial support of area businesses and organizations, including the Professional Firefighters of McKinney, Nissan of McKinney, Encore Wire Corporation, Tomes Auto Group and Medical Center of McKinney, we were able to host a memorable event. Other donors supplied door prizes and silent auction items. We thank each and every business, organization and individual who made this event possible.”
