McKinney Honors Veterans with Proclamation of Red Shirt Fridays

Matthew Bado, TSB Staff

Citizens and businesses unite to say thank you to veterans and their families.

McKINNEY — In a salute to area veterans, service members and their families, Mayor Brian Loughmiller issued a proclamation designating every Friday in the City of McKinney as Red Shirt Friday. The public is invited to a proclamation ceremony with distinguished guest, Congressman Sam Johnson, on Friday, March 9, beginning at 9 a.m. at Square Burger, 115 North Kentucky St., in McKinney’s historic district.

The Mayor’s proclamation of Red Shirt Fridays was spurred after the TownSquareBuzz Foundation launched its local “Paint McKinney Red” campaign, created to raise awareness about the unique needs of veterans, service members and their families.

“By wearing red on Fridays, we as a community are expressing our gratitude for the sacrifices made by our veterans and their families,” said Brian Loughmiller, Mayor of McKinney. “I encourage each citizen and business to join me in wearing red on Fridays to show we care.”

“Our vision is to unite the community in wearing red on Fridays,” said Bryan Criswell, Executive Director of TownSquareBuzz Foundation. “We are passionate about positively impacting veterans, service members and military families, and our vision is to see our entire town blanketed in red on Fridays to acknowledge our hometown warriors’ service and sacrifice. We can’t thank the Mayor and City Council enough for endorsing the cause.”

McKinney’s Red Shirt Fridays awareness campaign is a local version of the national Red Shirt Fridays initiative where citizens are encouraged to wear red on Fridays as a simple way to show support for servicemen and women.

Residents and businesses can purchase a signature “Honor Those Who Serve” t-shirt for $10, with the proceeds benefiting the Community Lifeline Center’s veterans support program.
