McKinney High Marquettes Shine in Dance Team Competition

The girls of the McKinney High School Marquettes dance team possess two qualities critical to success in any endeavor: talent and a tenacious work ethic. They leveraged both to their advantage recently at the Showtime International DFW Christmas Classic dance competition on December 10. The Marquettes were among 15 school and studio dance groups that gathered at Creekview High School in Carrollton for the event. The girls earned individual distinctions as well as high marks in a number of group dance categories on their way to claiming the title of Grand Champion in the Super Team Division.

Facing a relatively short time to prepare 10 group dances for the DFW Christmas Classic, the Marquettes had their work cut out for them. With more than 50 varsity members and 20 junior varsity members, the sheer number of performers raised the difficulty level considerably. Marquette Director Amy Neely says that it is unique that a team of this size is capable of preparing so many routines at the outset of the competition season. “For students to be able to master advanced dance elements with precision within a team of so many is a great accomplishment, especially this early. It is a true testament to the dedication of the girls on the varsity and junior varsity.”

That dedication resulted in a multitude of awards and recognitions at the event:

Junior Varsity Marquettes

First Runner-up — Pom

Grand Champion — Super Team Division

While she is justifiably proud of the way the Marquettes distinguished themselves at the competition, Neely finds even greater satisfaction in the character her dancers demonstrated in preparing for it. “The members of both teams displayed class and dedication that would make anyone proud,” she says. “This means way more to me than any trophy that they earn.”
