McKinney Family YMCA Offers Healthy Living Programs To Fight Obesity

Submitted by McKinney Family YMCA

September is National Obesity Month. Our nation and our state have a growing obesity problem in adults and in our children. Approximately twenty-four percent of adults in Collin County are obese. Compared to a national average of 25 percent, an estimated 29 percent of Texans are classified as obese.

Fast food, which is often a part of most people’s daily lives, hours spent in front of the television or engaged in video games, depression and lack of motivation are some of the factors that contribute to so many individuals struggle to maintain a healthy weight and have contributed to creating this epidemic in our country.

“It is part of my personal mission in life to have an impact on people in a holistic way, creating programming and helping people to address their barriers and overcome their doubts and fears to achieve healthy spirit, mind and body, “ said Aileen Connor, Membership and Wellness Director.

“Currently the McKinney YMCA is offering a MEND (Mind, Exercise, Nutrition, Do It) program to help children and families who are at risk of obesity, as well as fitness programming to give anyone who needs to shake things up and get a kick start toward being more fit,” said Teresa Sheffield, McKinney YMCA Executive Director. “Our members experience a sense of belonging that can’t be found anywhere else.”

In honor of National Obesity Month, the McKinney YMCA will hold an “open house” starting Saturday, Sept. 8 for one week. The community is invited to come try the YMCA and bring a friend for free. Community guests will receive a seven-day guest pass and get to try out group exercise classes, the fitness room and the weight room. Be sure to check out the new 5:30 am “Rise and Shine Boot Camp” starting on September 17th.

McKinney Winter Youth Sports registration is underway for basketball (K-8th), rookie basketball (3 yr- 5yr), indoor soccer (3 yr-6 yr) and volleyball (1st – 8th).

“YMCA youth sports programs are a terrific way to engage our youth in a fun environment that encourages developing healthy habits for a lifetime,” said Zac Gutierrez, McKinney YMCA Sports Director.

Additionally, everyone who brings this article along with them will get their name entered in a drawing for a prize that includes one hour of group personal training.   This is open to current members who bring a friend, as well as those who are not yet members at the Y.

Now is the perfect time to join the Y.  Join on Sept. 8 for $8, on Sept. 9 for $9 and so on. The sooner you join, the more you’ll save.  Joining fees are regularly $25-$95.  First month due at signing.  Offer ends 9/30/12.  The McKinney Family YMCA is located at 300 S. Ridge Road and can be reached at 972- 529-2559 or
