McKinney CVB Taking Donations for Victims of Bastrop Fire

Starting on Monday, September 12 through Friday, September 30, the McKinney Convention & Visitors Bureau (MVB) will be accepting donations at their office located at 1575 Heritage Dr., Suite 100, in McKinney.  The offices are open Monday through Friday from 8am-5pm. Alldonations will be delivered to the Bastrop community at the end of the month.

“Like many of you, we have been watching in disbelief the horrible fires that have consumed a number of homes across the state of Texas, but specifically in the Bastrop area of the Hill Country.  I have been communicating with the Bastrop Main Street Director and the Bastrop Convention and Exhibit Center Director to see how things are coming along for them and to see if there was anything we could do to assist,” said Diann Bayes, Executive Director of the McKinney Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Bayes said she was told that the fires were thirty percent contained as of Wednesday and that by Friday morning (Sept.9), 1,387 homes had already been destroyed in Bastrop, a community with a population of 7,552.

The Food Pantry Manager stated that they have opened a warehouse for food and are expecting to have to feed families who have lost everything for at least the next six months. All sorts of household items are needed for families who have lost absolutely everything.

Donations can include household items like the following:

    Diapers
    Formula
    Baby food
    Towels
Toiletries – toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo, soap, razors, feminine products
Paper goods – toilet paper, paper towels, tissues, baby wipes
Kids items – toys, games, clothes
    Bedding – blankets, sheets, pillows
Pet supplies – crates, food, toys, bedding
    Non-perishable food

“We have been fortunate in McKinney to not have experienced these fires and I strongly feel the need to reach out to the citizens of the small town of Bastrop who have suffered this great loss,” Bayes said.

The CVB will NOT be taking financial donations.  If you are interested in making a monetary donation, visit the American Red Cross of Central Texas website  http://www.centex.redcross.org/index.asp?IDCapitulo=F9ZLZNZ3KD  or call 512.332.8661.
