It was hot as usual, although a bit of shade allowed the percussionists from the McKinney Boyd High School Band to escape the most intense rays from the sun, as they demonstrated their skills for parents and onlookers in downtown McKinney on Friday, August 10.
The demonstration was a preliminary event to the band’s annual 12-hour drum-a-thon, which was an opportunity for the member’s to raise funds to supplement the band’s budget.
“The drum-a-thon allows us to raise money for things like drum heads and sticks that can really add up,” percussion director Derek Stoughton said. Stoughton further explained that the funds raised will be specifically used for the percussion group.
“In the future, we will probably put all the monies that are raised into one pot for the entire band, but for now, the money raised during the drum-a-thon, goes to this group,” he said.
Councilman Roger Harris (At-Large) told those present that he is a former Boyd band parent, explaining that his son Stephen played in the Boyd band. Harris was the first to put cash in the band’s collection box.
Although the students were successful at raising some of the much-needed funds, they were short of meeting their fundraising goal. Donations are still being accepted from the public. For more information, please contact Mr. Stoughton.
