McKinney Boyd Volleyball Prepares for State Championship `Rematch’ vs. Coppell

By Audra Paine, TSB Staff

It’s only one regular season volleyball match.

Its’ not even a district match.

And the team doesn’t want the hype to get too out of control.

But … it’s still McKinney Boyd vs. Coppell, this Tuesday night, in a rematch of last season’s 5A state championship that was won by the Cowgirls. It takes place at 6:30 p.m. at Coppell. And it brings back memories for those Lady Broncos who truly believed that the night of Nov. 19, 2011, they were going to walk out of Texas State University’s arena in San Marcos with a state title.

“Going into the Coppell game last year, we had the mind set of we play as a team and we win as a team, which is what we had been doing all season,” Boyd senior Megan Mollett said. “We went into that game having no doubts that we would pull out a win. We knew that the 100 percent effort we gave in practice and games would show in the state match. The great thing about our team was that we were eager.”

That grueling match for the title last November saw Coppell pull out the win by scores of 25-22, 25-19, 20-25 and 25-19.

In reflection to the loss, Boyd coach Kelly Quinn had a few thoughts on what might have gone wrong and an idea of what they could have done differently in order to produce better results.

“It was a great match,” Quinn said. “I believe they served aggressively. We passed well, but I think we could have spread our offensive a little more. We were relying on just one or two players instead of our entire offense.”

The team seems to be awfully relaxed about the upcoming pre-district re-match with the Cowgirls, who are members of District 5-5A. Despite Boyd’s 22-5 record heading into the match and Coppell’s 19-1 record, Quinn and the Lady Broncos don’t look at this game as strictly revenge or this season’s biggest match, but instead a chance to get the final kinks out before District 10-5A competition begins on Friday vs. Plano West.

“We’re focused on district,” Quinn said. “That’s just a pre-district game to get us ready for district and win district. If we happen to come together at the state tournament, we’ll scout them just as hard.”
