McKinney Boyd Students Take Home Gold at National FCCLA Leadership Conference

McKinney, Texas – Eight thousand students from across the country gathered in Washington, D.C. two weeks ago for the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) National Leadership Conference held July 5 – 9. Among the representatives from Texas were four students from McKinney Boyd High School who earned gold medals for their outstanding entries in the conference’s STAR competition events.

Acacia Browne and Meredith Schramm, both recent graduates from Boyd, won the top award for their “Focus on Children – Occupational Specific” project, and Madison Boykin and Nicole Hartford, who will be seniors at Boyd in 2015–2016, won gold for their entry in the “Promote and Publicize FCCLA – Occupational Specific” event. To qualify for the national competition, teams had to earn gold or silver in state competition.

fccla2“All four of these young ladies set a goal to make it nationals this year,” said Taylor. “They started planning their projects in August, and I’m proud of the leadership that they demonstrated while doing these projects. They did it all themselves. The only thing [fellow teacher Rhonda] Martin and I did was give feedback on their ideas. They had to get all their planning and approvals done on their own. This meant that they had to contact administrators, teachers, PTO leaders, etc. to get their projects approved and executed. Both teams were complimented by the judges at Nationals for their professional appearance and presentations. I wasn’t surprised. They are McKinney Boyd students and that’s just what we do. ‘We believe and keep it classy.’”

FCCLA is a national nonprofit career and technical student organization that began in 1945 as Future Homemakers of America and today claims some 200,000 members in 5,500 chapters. On their website, FCCLA is described as “the only career and technical student organization with the family as its central focus.”

Texas boasts a strong membership core, and more than 670 Texas students participated in the 2015 National Conference, earning the state chapter an award for Largest Local Chapter and for State Membership Increase.

Locally, the Boyd chapter is thriving under the leadership of Family and Consumer Sciences teacher Tamara Taylor who was named the 2014 Outstanding Teacher for Region III by the Family and Consumer Sciences Teachers Association of Texas (FCSTAT). Last year’s membership at Boyd reached 164, and three of Taylor’s students served in high-ranking FCCLA officer positions at the regional and state level.

While in D.C., Boyd participants joined 7,000 other attendees in a rally for healthy families on the Capitol grounds and afterward, delivered information to their states’ congressional representatives about the importance of Career & Technology Education and FCCLA.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of FCCLA, and Taylor and her students at Boyd are celebrating with a call to all alumni. “If you were ever a member of Future Homemakers of America,” said Taylor, “you are an alumnus of FCCLA. We would like to hear from you!”
