McKinney Boyd Girls Claim School’s First State Bowling Championship

Submitted by Shane Mauldin, McKinney ISD

There’s nothing quite as nerve-rattling — or as satisfying — as the raucous sound of a bowling ball crashing through a cluster of pins. And, for the McKinney Boyd High School Girls Bowling team, that clamorous racket was particularly satisfying as they pounded their way through frame after frame to claim the school’s first State High School Bowling Championship.

After honing their skills throughout the regular season against opponents from Allen, Plano, Lovejoy, Prosper and McKinney High School, the McKinney Boyd team earned an invitation to the State Championship Tournament held Sunday, March 24 in Fort Worth.

Led by coaches John Fikes, Les Cline, Rick Irvine and Lisa Wasson, the seven-member team from Boyd emerged from a field of 36 contenders to advance to the finals. Once there, they claimed the championship with two straight wins against San Antonio Madison High School.

But, the path to the championship wasn’t without its challenges. During the final four rounds of competition, the Boyd team had to win back-to-back games against three different opponents to avoid elimination.

Their commitment to each other was key to their success. “Last year we had some girls that could bowl,” said Cline. “This year we have a team! We were not expected to win, yet through teamwork and dedication we did.”

Team member Christie Draper echoed her coach’s sentiment, “This bowling season was one of the greatest! Our team really became a team and learned how to support each other no matter what.”

“I love this team with all my hear and couldn’t ask for a better one!” she said.
