The McKinney Christian Mustangs knocked off the Coram Deo Lions 35-6 to secure a spot in the TAPPS football playoffs. MCA also finishes with the best regular season record in school history. The Mustangs bolted out of the gate to a 5-1 record, but had dropped their last three games in the absence of numerous starters. And on Friday night, several of those starters returned to contribute to the win over the Lions.
MCA (6-4) continues next week as a wild card team in a bi-district game against First Baptist Academy at the First Baptist Academy Sports Complex.
On Friday’s opening drive, consecutive penalties, including holding on a touchdown pass and a dropped pass at the 3-yard line, helped the Mustangs stop the Lions at the MCA 30. Aside from the Lion’s first and last possessions, the Mustang defense squeezed the Lion’s for only 91 yards of total offense.
Taking over, MCA methodically ground the ball down the field to score. The Mustang running game, which has been sluggish the past few weeks, chugged back to speed. The Mustangs pushed down the field by controlling the line of scrimmage and breaking tackles. Fittingly, the mission was completed when Sky Walker broke through two tacklers on a 5-yard touchdown run. Caleb Wysong kicked the point after.
The opening of the second quarter was dominated by the play of MCA’s versatile Wysong. Wysong intercepted a pass on the first play of the second quarter to begin the Mustang possession. He then made several runs on the drive, culminating in a 2-yard run around right end for a touchdown.
Continuing the aggressive, physical style of its offense, MCA’s defense appeared to contain Coram Deo’s offense. However, on consecutive fourth downs, by using a fake punt, and a questionable pass reception, the scrappy Lions twice managed to escape the Mustang defenders’ snare. Finally, the Mustang’s bend-but-not-break defense stopped the Lions by forcing a turnover on downs at MCA’s 25 when George Harris batted away a pass in the end zone. It was the last time Coram Deo would threaten to score until late in the fourth quarter leaving MCA leading 13-0 at the half.
Second half scoring began after the teams traded turnovers and failed attempts to convert on fourth down inside Coram Deo’s 20-yard line. The Lions’ failed attempt gave MCA possession at the 17. The Mustangs scored in two plays as Wysong’s slippery running evaded defenders on a 12-yard touchdown run. Quarterback Reese Shaw scrambled in for the two-point conversion.
MCA scored on its next two possessions to seal the win. The first was Isaiah Gore’s 4-yard reception from Shaw. It ended a drive which featured the relentless running of Sky Walker, who ground out 163 yards rushing on the night. Walker then capped the Mustang’s three consecutive touchdowns on three consecutive possessions with a one-yard plunge through heavy traffic. When the dust had cleared it was 35-0.
Coram Deo squeezed out a late touchdown on a twelve yard pass from Luke Black to Charles Wilson. The failed kick ended scoring at 35-6. The Lions finish the season at 3-7.
