The McKinney Christian Academy wrestling team has come a long way in a short time.
The 3rd year program upset several teams to finish second in the 2012 TAPPS State Wrestling Championships held at Liberty Christian School in Argyle this past Saturday. This year’s state tournament featured 10 nationally ranked PREP wrestlers.
“It’s an incredible feeling.” said Coach Rodney Doyle. “We finished eleventh in 2010 and fifth in 2011. We knew it would be a stretch to beat St. Thomas, but felt like we could battle for a top four finish. t. Thomas is one of the top two or three teams in the state, public or private. Liberty is solid top to bottom and Bishop Lynch always has two or three of the best guys in the country. We’re battling big 5A schools with established programs. At the Championships, everyone left it all out there. I couldn’t be happier about the way we competed.”
Indeed, out of 14 weight classes, nine Mustang wrestlers placed in the top four.
“I have to give a lot of credit to Coach Brining,” said Doyle. “He does a better job getting wrestlers up to speed faster than any guy I’ve ever seen. Couple that with a great group of kids, and we are excited about the future. ‘Build and Believe’ is what we say.”
Coach Doyle has reason to be optimistic. The Mustangs will return all but one wrestler next season.
