The McKinney Christian Academy Lady Mustangs defeated the visiting Canyon Creek Cougars 64-19 Tuesday night in girls basketball to run their district record to 5-0 and maintain their hold on first place in TAPPS District 4-3A.
The Mustangs put the defensive clamps on early and raced to a 24-2 first quarter lead behind Sophomore point guard Julie James’ nine points and freshman power forward Hanna Wilks eight. Senior Post-Forward Kaitlynn McAdams added 4 and fellow starters Sidney Thompson and Sarah Grubbs hit for 2 and 1 respectively.
The Mustangs continued the defensive pressure from the half court in the 2nd and limited the young Cougars to 4 made freethrows. Meanwhile the Mustangs expanded their lead with 5 by McAdams and 4 by James. Wilks and Grubbs hit for 2 each. Soph Lily Thompson added 1 of 2 freethrows as the second unit saw good action in the second quarter that ended with the Mustangs up big, 38-6.
The Mustang starters returned or half of the third quarter before giving way to the reserves in the third. McAdams would add 6 before retiring. James had four more and Grubbs two. It was 50-8 to start the fourth and Wilks ran with the four available reserves. She would add 5 more and be joined by soph backup forward Kaycee Zanetell who also hit for 5 in the quarter including her second trey in as many games. Junior Kylie Madry hit a runner off of a fastbreak and freshman Makenna Schulte tossed an eight-footer in before the buzzer for the final margin.
James led the Mustangs with a very complete all around game, a near triple double , as she ended her partial game with 17 points, 13 steals, eight rebounds and four assists. McAdams and Wilks hit for 15 each with McAdams leading in boards with nine and adding five steals. Wilks pulled down eight caroms. Grubbs and Zanetell each scored five while Sid Thompson, Madry and Schulte each had a basket. Lily Thompson added one point to close out the Mustang account.
The Mustangs go to 18-6 (5-0) on the season, having won nine of their last 10 and eight in a row. They will have their toughest week of the season next week with return matches vs 3rd place Brook Hill (3-2) at MCA Tuesday and then Friday with a visit to second place Lutheran (4-1).
The latest TAPPS poll has the Mustangs ranked at #4 in TAPPS 3-A behind #1Austin Brentwood, #2 Tomball Rosehill, and #3 Ft Worth Lake Country Christian.
