The McKinney Christian Academy Lady Mustangs found rough sledding at last weekend’s S& S Tourney, dropping two of three basketball games and seeing their season record drop to 9-4.
The Mustangs were competitive in all three games, in fact led all three games at halftime, but managed only to close one of them out, their second round game vs Era, which the Mustangs won 39-29.
MCA opened the tourney against the host S & S Lady Rams and played a spectacular first half, racking up 34 points en route to a 34-25 lead behind 12 points by Kaitlynn McAdams, seven points each by Julie James and Hannah Wilks, and six by Sidney Thompson. However, the Mustangs apparently had used all of their ammunition and could only register 14 second half points, while S & S’s big 6-2 post began to pound the Mustangs inside. The Mustangs could not stop her as she matched the Mustang team out put with 14 second half points herself. S& S grabbed their first lead with two minutes to go and did not look back as they closed out the Stangs 54-48.
McAdams ended with 15, Wilks 13, James 10, and Thompson six. Sarah Gubbs tallied four points.
Bounced to the losers bracket, the Mustangs used stout defense to go up 20-10 over Era at the intermission. They stretched the lead to 29-17 after three but surrendered a couple of three pointers to Era who cut the lead to six in the fourth. Threatening to squander another lead, the Mustangs regained their composure as McAdams closed with eight in the fourth for the 39-29 win. McAdams led again with 16, James followed with 14, Wilks six and Grubbs three.
Last year, the Mustangs found themselves in the consolation championship and took home the hardware for that game. They looked like they might do it again taking a 20-18 halftime lead over Van Alstyne, weathering Hunter Oliff’s three first quarter treys. The Mustangs came out ice cold in the third quarter however, scoring only 5 points and fell behind 31-25. The Mustangs finally got a little scoring going in the fourth with 14, but Van Alstyne held them off with 10 points from the free throw line for a 45-39 triumph.
Wilks led all scorers with 20 points, James added 12 and McAdams cooled to seven. Thompson ended with two.
Out of action this week due to Fine Arts week at MCA, the Mustangs will next be in action Dec 17th. Adding a little cross cultural flair to their schedule, the Mustangs will entertain the visiting Dolphin Basketball club from Australia at the MCA gym at 4:30.
