The MCA Lady Mustangs started the 2012-13 basketball season Tuesday night with a 48-11 thumping of the Denton Calvary Lady Lions. The Lady Mustangs, who were 21-12 last season and area finalists in the playoffs, lost one senior to graduation and are looking for a deeper run in the playoffs this year.
They began the campaign with a stifling defense that limited Calvary to seven first half points and 11 for the game. Meanwhile, newcomer freshman power forward Hannah Wilks got her high school career off to a great start with 10 first quarter points and Soph point Julie James added three points as the Mustangs grabbed a 13-5 first quarter advantage. Wilks hit for seven in the second, James added six and junior Kylie Madry added two free throws for a 28-7 lead at the break.
Lady Mustangs senior forward leader Kaitlynn McAdams, voted the No. 2 player in the district last year, was understandably a little slow out of the gate. She was leading the Mustang volleyball team in the playoffs until this past Saturday. Held scoreless in the first half, she rallied with eight in the second half. Wilks added eight more as well. James and freshman post Mackenna Schulte added baskets for the final margin.
Wilks led the Mustangs with 25 points, 18 boards and seven steals. James, a University of Kentucky soccer signee, had an equally impressive line with 11 points, 10 steals, nine rebounds and four assists. McAdams finished with eight points, six steals, four boards and seven blocks. Senior Sidney Thompson added five rebounds. Sophomore Kayce Zanetell had five steals. Schulte added four boards to her two points. Madry finished with two points.
