Mayor’s Health Partnership Recognized Nationally

mayor's health partnershipIn January, McKinney launched the Mayor’s Health Partnership initiative as a collaboration between McKinney Mayor Brian Loughmiller, the McKinney Independent School District, Cooper Fitness Center at Craig Ranch and Baylor Medical Center at McKinney. The initiative has a mission “to promote a healthy, active community” in part by providing low- or no-cost resources to the community to become more active and healthy overall.

In 2013, the Mayor’s Health Partnership offered the Live Healthy Texas Challenge to the entire city as a way to kick-start a healthy year. The goal of the challenge is to compete in teams, tracking minutes of activity and weight lost. This year, the City of McKinney’s involvement was recognized as a Live Healthy America Boom Award Winner in Worksite Wellness programming.

The Live Healthy Texas 10- week challenge from Jan. 28 through April 5 is a team-based approach to help people reach fitness and weight goals. The online platform enables participants to track physical activity, weight loss or both, depending on the team goal. Other resources included on the site are meal plans, video workouts and healthy recipes. Cooper Fitness Center at Craig Ranch offered free health assessments to participants before and after the challenge.

During the 10-week challenge that started in January, more than 400 city employees and more than 100 residents competed, tallying more than 1 million minutes of activity and losing more than 1000 pounds.

“The cornerstone of Live Healthy America is our family values that lead our company in everything we do. Each year, we award organizations whose innovative initiatives reflect one of our family values, and this year the City of McKinney was recognized with a Boom award for their wellness program and reflection of the Live Healthy Family Value of Community = Family = Happiness,” said Troy Vincent President and CEO of Live Healthy America.

“We have offered the Live Healthy Texas Challenge to the entire community because the team-centered approach fits perfectly with the community focus of the Mayor’s Health Partnership. I want to encourage residents to set and reach goals for a healthier lifestyle, and this challenge is a great way to start,” said McKinney Mayor Brian Loughmiller. “We are proud to be nationally recognized for our community outreach to make McKinney the healthiest city in the country.”
